Child Specialist
A Child Specialist is a mental health professional with expertise in child development and behavior who acts in a supportive role for children during the divorce process. Divorce is s stressful time for children - they are forced to deal with a decision they did not make, but one that affects them. They often feel caught in the middle, afraid to express themselves for fear of upsetting parents or being abandoned. Children may act out or internalize feelings to the point of becoming anxious or depressed. The Child Specialist is able to listen to the children in a non-judgmental way and relay information to parents - a "voice" for the children during a stressful time as the family transitions. Bonnie Barlow and Debra Moran of Transitions are skilled Child Specialists.
